NINETEEN
Mei gulped.
They were back at the first foster home. Agent Lennox had parked in the same place theyâd parked the day before, and for now, the money was safe in the trunk of the rental. Heâd turned off his earpiece and stowed it in the glove compartment. All she had to do was be brave one more time.
âIâll go in alone,â she said, trying to sound confident.
âI should go in with you.â
âNo. Theyâd see your hands and wonder what happened. Besides, you donât speak Mandarin. I do.â
He hadnât taken his eyes off the dismal home. âWhat if you run into trouble?â
âI wonât.â She hoped. It seemed a more dangerous operation now that they were back and she was really preparing to go inside all by herself.
âHere.â He unholstered one of his pistols from under his arm, checked the magazine and handed it to her grip first. âTake this.â
âI donât need a gun.â
âTake it,â he insisted. âIâll feel better if you can protect yourself while youâre inside.â
âI have no place to hide it.â She didnât want the weapon near her, much less when she fully planned to be carrying a child with her. âBesides, I donât know how to use it.â
He frowned, the gun still in his outstretched hand. âDo you ever do what youâre told?â
âI did. Once. A long time ago. Maybe.â She would have smiled if she werenât so scared.
âI doubt it.â He secured his weapon and faced the house again.
Taking a big breath, she opened the door and stepped outside. The chill wind of the dismal day reminded her to pull her jacket tight. Her knees shook as she made her way back to the front door. As quick as she rang the doorbell, Jun answered, only this time she barely opened the door a crack.
âWhy you here? What you want?â
âIâd like to talk to you about one of the babies my husband and I saw yesterday.â
Jun peered past her to the car where Agent Lennox waited. âWhere other car? Why he not come with you? He scared?â
âNo, he stayed in the car because he has your money.â Mei played her ace in the hole. âWeâre willing to pay you for the child if you will let us take her with us.â
Junâs eyebrows shot up, but she recovered quickly. âHow much money you got?â
âMay I come in?â Mei resorted to her alter ego. âOr are you going to keep me standing out here in the cold while you ask stupid questions?â
That did the trick. Jun opened the door and stepped aside for Mei to enter. âYou want same baby he like yesterday?â
âYes. Do you still have her?â
âMaybe.â Jun glanced down the hall where a group of older girls stood in a line. All dressed in their orange dresses, they looked like they were waiting for a fire drill.
âWhatâs going on?â Mei asked.
âWe moving,â Jun admitted. âAgain.â
âWhat do you mean, youâre moving?â Meiâs heart skipped a beat. Was the baby already gone?
Jun shrugged and walked toward the hall where the girls waited.
